Hammamet is the oldest touristic center in the country, though aside from the ocean there is nothing at all special about the town. All resorts in Tunis have wonderful parks but even among them Hammamet stands out with its luxurious gardens. The main principle of town planning here - houses must not be higher than cypresses. The city is founded about 5 centuries ago. There are the fortress walls and the Big Mosque still preserved in it. The city keeps its one-floor image. Tourists are waited here by wide sand beaches, modern hotels with high level of service, a plenty of bars, restaurants, stores, markets.
The history of Hammamet dates back many centuries, making it one of Tunisia’s most historically rich coastal towns. The area was originally influenced by the ancient civilizations of North Africa, including the Phoenicians and later the Roman Empire, who used the region as a strategic coastal settlement. Its location along the Mediterranean made it an important point for trade, fishing, and cultural exchange.
During the medieval period, Hammamet became an important fortified town under Arab rule. The construction of the Kasbah of Hammamet in the 15th century helped defend the city from pirate attacks and foreign invasions. This historic fortress, which still stands today overlooking the sea, is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks and offers visitors a glimpse into Hammamet’s defensive past.
At the heart of the old town lies the Medina of Hammamet, a traditional walled area with narrow streets, historic houses, and lively markets. Over time, the medina grew into a center of local culture, trade, and craftsmanship. Its architecture reflects centuries of Arab, Ottoman, and Mediterranean influences.
In the 20th century, Hammamet transformed into one of Tunisia’s leading tourist destinations. Artists, writers, and travelers were drawn to its peaceful atmosphere, beautiful beaches, and historic charm. Today, Hammamet blends its fascinating past with modern tourism, allowing visitors to experience both its rich heritage and its vibrant coastal lifestyle.
