The history of Port El Kantaoui is closely connected to the ancient heritage of the nearby city of Sousse, one of the oldest settlements in North Africa. The area around Sousse dates back to the Phoenician period and later flourished under the Roman Empire, becoming an important trading and cultural center along the Mediterranean coast.

Unlike the ancient city nearby, Port El Kantaoui itself is a relatively modern resort. It was developed in the late 1970s and officially opened in 1979 as Tunisia’s first purpose-built tourist complex.
