Topola
Topola is a small Šumadija town with a surprisingly grand story. Surrounded by gentle hills, orchards, and vineyards, it feels like the heart of central Serbia beats a little slower here. Yet above the town rises Oplenac, the royal complex of the Karađorđević dynasty, giving Topola a sense of history and dignity far beyond its size. The star of Topola is the Church of St. George, a dazzling white marble masterpiece whose interior glows with more than 40 million mosaic tiles. This is the royal mausoleum of the Karađorđević family, and walking inside feels like stepping into a shimmering encyclopedia of Serbian medieval art. The view from the hill stretches across Šumadija’s rolling landscape, making Oplenac one of the most memorable viewpoints in the region.
